Of infections and reproduction - from childbed through sexual transmission to COVID-19

Abstract

Whereas the current generation of reproductive health practitioners seems to have been relatively distant from their communicable disease colleagues until the recent pandemic of COVID-19, a close relationship existed between those two specialties during the last two centuries. The control of reproductive health infections led to milestones in the history of medicine. By the 1970s, infectious diseases had been well controlled in the Western world, largely through antibiotic therapy and childhood vaccination which also addressed congenital rubella
