Information and communication technologies: A novel but underused approach in sexual and reproductive health and rights in Africa

Abstract

It is now well recognised that sub-Saharan Africa is characterised by several sexual and reproductive health challenges which have been poorly addressed despite years of affirmative and progressive recommendations from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), the Beijing 4th World Conference on Women, the Millennium Development Goals, and now the Sustainable Development Goals. The technical approaches to address these challenges are well known, and although implementation has been a challenge, it is now evident that if more resources and trained personnel are deployed, more can be achieved. However, the continent has been embargoed in this respect by two essential approaches necessary to address the problem.
